Rolling Over? Here's How to Fix It (Fast)

Quick Intro:
Tired of weak grounders to shortstop or third? You might be rolling over—one of the most common mistakes young hitters make. The good news? You can fix it with a few small tweaks.
⚾️ What Does “Rolling Over” Mean?
Rolling over happens when your top hand takes control too early, causing the barrel to cut across the zone instead of staying through the ball. Instead of driving line drives, you're smacking grounders to the pull side.
🛠️ 3 Drills to Help You Fix It
These drills are straight from the pros and easy to work into your next practice or cage session:
1. Bottom Hand Only Drill
🔧 What it works on: Barrel control & staying through the zone
📍 How to do it:
Use a tee or soft toss.
Take your top hand off the bat—swing using only your bottom hand (left hand for righties, right hand for lefties).
Focus on staying inside the ball and finishing high, not wrapping around.
✅ Goal: Clean, controlled swings that drive the ball up the middle or opposite field.
2. Outside Tee Drill
🔧 What it works on: Staying inside the ball & barrel path
📍 How to do it:
Set up a batting tee on the outer half of the plate.
Focus on hitting the ball to the opposite field—line drives, not ground balls.
Keep your front shoulder closed and let the ball travel.
✅ Goal: Barrel stays in the zone longer, which keeps you from rolling over too early.
3. “Split Grip” Drill
🔧 What it works on: Feel & barrel awareness
📍 How to do it:
Place your hands on the bat with a small gap between them (a couple inches).
Take slow, controlled swings off a tee or soft toss.
The gap forces you to feel each hand's role and prevents the top hand from taking over early.
✅ Goal: Train your hands to work together properly through the swing.
🎯 Why This Matters
If you want to drive the ball and get on base, fixing this one flaw can change your whole season. Coaches notice it. Scouts notice it. Your confidence will notice it, too.

Pro Tip:
Try filming your swing in slow motion. If your top hand is flipping over before contact, it’s time to go back to these drills.
